  • Evaluate conformity of the AI management system to ISO/IEC 42001 requirements according to fundamental audit concepts and principles
  • Plan, conduct, and close an ISO/IEC 42001 compliance audit in accordance with ISO/IEC 17021-1 requirements, ISO 19011 guidelines, and other auditing best practices
  • Manage an ISO/IEC 42001 audit program

The “PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor” exam complies with the requirements of the PECB Examination and Certification Program (ECP). It covers the following competency domains:

Domain 1: Fundamental principles and concepts of an AI management system

Domain 2: AI management system requirements

Domain 3: Fundamental audit concepts and principles

Domain 4: Preparing an ISO/IEC 42001 audit

Domain 5: Conducting an ISO/IEC 42001 audit

Certification

PECB ISO/IEC 42001 Certification Path and Requirements

After successfully passing the exam, you may apply for one of four professional credentials, depending on your level of experience. All credentials require passing the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor Exam (or an approved equivalent) and signing the PECB Code of Ethics.

1. Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Provisional Auditor

Suitable for newcomers to the field who have mastered theoretical knowledge but lack practical auditing or industry experience.

  • Exam Requirement: Pass the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor Exam (or equivalent)

  • Professional Experience: None required

  • Management System Audit Experience: None required

  • Additional Requirement: Sign the PECB Code of Ethics

2. Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Auditor

Designed for professionals with a foundational level of experience in artificial intelligence management and auditing.

  • Exam Requirement: Pass the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor Exam (or equivalent)

  • Professional Experience: Two years total, including at least one year of specific work experience in Artificial Intelligence (AI)

  • Management System Audit Experience: A minimum total of 200 hours of qualifying audit activities

  • Additional Requirement: Sign the PECB Code of Ethics

3. Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor

The standard credential for experienced professionals qualified to plan, lead, and manage AI management system audit teams.

  • Exam Requirement: Pass the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor Exam (or equivalent)

  • Professional Experience: Five years total, including at least two years of specific work experience in Artificial Intelligence (AI)

  • Management System Audit Experience: A minimum total of 300 hours of qualifying audit activities

  • Additional Requirement: Sign the PECB Code of Ethics

4. Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Senior Lead Auditor

The highest tier for expert practitioners with comprehensive, long-term leadership experience in auditing AI frameworks.

  • Exam Requirement: Pass the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor Exam (or equivalent)

  • Professional Experience: Ten years total, including at least seven years of specific work experience in Artificial Intelligence (AI)

  • Management System Audit Experience: A minimum total of 1,000 hours of qualifying audit activities

  • Additional Requirement: Sign the PECB Code of Ethics

Qualifying Audit Activities Note: To be considered valid by PECB, your audit hours must adhere to best practices and include activities such as audit planning, managing an audit program, drafting audit or nonconformity reports, conducting on-site audits, and leading an audit team.

General

  • Certification and examination fees are included in the price of the training course.
  • Participants will receive training course materials containing over 450 pages of explanatory information, examples, best practices, exercises, and quizzes.
  • An attestation of course completion worth 31 CPD (Continuing Professional Development) credits will be issued to participants who attend the training course.
  • If candidates fail the exam, they may retake it within 12 months following their initial attempt at no additional cost.
